Climatecosts (project completed)

The EU FP7 programme ‘ClimateCost: The Full Costs of Climate Change’ generates climate scenarios to project future climate impacts and associated economic costs across Europe during the 21st century.

Throughout the 21st century and beyond temperatures are expected to increase due to anthropogenic climate change. As the oceans warm and ice sheets melt, sea-levels will also rise creating large adverse impacts in the coastal zone. Using the DIVA modelling tool to calculate extreme water   levels, by the end of the century Europe could anticipate:

Over 400,000 people could be potentially flooded each year if defences are not upgraded from present day standards.

The total costs of flood damage could exceed 30 billion euros per year.

Climate mitigation and adaptation scenarios are explored, both of which can significantly reduce those affected and costs.
